Siblings Peter and Michael Spierig wrote and directed the vampire film Daybreakers. It stars Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Sam Neill.Filming occurred in July to September 2007 in Australia. Its release date in Britain is on January 6, 2010 and will open in Northern America two days later.

Hawke plays the vampire analyst Edward Dalton who looks into the process of saving humanity from extinction. The vampires are out to get people. Dafoe is the cured vampire Elvis who duels with Dalton and Neill is the vampire Charles Bromley who is behind a powerful firm.

Also in the movie are Claudia Karvan as Audrey Bennet, Edward's love interest, Isabel Lucas as Alison Bromley, and Vince Colosimo as Christopher.
The journey to make Daybreakers commenced in November 2004 when Lionsgate received the script to the film. Spierig brothers collaborated before in the 2003 film Undead. It took them 2 years to get the financing to make the film. The producers were the Film Finance Corporation Australia. The location was set to be in Queensland.
In May 2007, Hawke was cast in the lead role. Also in the same month, Neill joined. The green light on filming took place two months later on July 16, 2007. WETA, renowned for the creature aftermath of The Lord of the Rings, also created the visuals for Daybreakers.The flick has a $21 million budget and the State presidency also contributed to the filmmakers. They finished filming in September 2007 - right in good time. There were some re-shoots but these were done quickly and further delays were avoided.

When asked to describe the film, Hawke asserted it was a story of man's relationship with natural resources. Today, humans abuse what they get from the planet and that is why there are needs for substitutes.Hawke has also released statements that the film was'low art' and'unpretentious and silly.'
